Dr. Mazaheri has expertise in Physiotherapy and Human Movement Sciences. His research has specifically focused on understanding how pain, injury and ageing has affected sensorimotor control of human movement. Understanding the role played by cognition in motor control has received special attention in his research. Outcome measurement in physiotherapy is another research interest of Dr. Mazaheri.

Biography

Masood Mazaheri received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan (2001), his Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran (2004) and his first PhD from University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, Tehran (2009). His research focused on the effects of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly low back pain, on postural control and validation of outcome measurements in rehabilitation. His research during this period has provided the field with a better understanding of the impact of musculoskeletal injuries on the relation between posture and cognition and provided health practitioners with data regarding reliability, validity and responsiveness of the more prevalent outcome measures in rehabilitation.

From 2009-2012, Masood Mazaheri was working as a university lecturer. A crucial step in his research happened when he started to collaborate with several researchers at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2010 and 2011. From this collaboration, he learned that to ensure success of his end goal, i.e. improving mobility disorders, he needed multidisciplinary expertise to address more complex research questions. Therefore, he started his PhD fellowship in the field of mobility and ageingin the ‘MOVE-AGE’ program funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus Mundus program. The project was a collaboration between Vrije University Amsterdam and KU Leuven. His thesis focused on how attentional aspects are related to walking adaptability and balance control in older adults, under supervision of Professor Peter Beek, Prof. Jacques Duysens, Dr. Lieke Peper and Dr. Melvyn Roerdink. By the end of his PhD he has been awarded for the Best Oral Presentation at the MOVE-AGE Conference in Manchester, UK.
