As Director of Finance, Chris is responsible for the overall strategic and operational financial management of the University.  This includes responsibility for financial planning, accounting, treasury, pensions, payroll, procurement and internal audit.  He advises the Vice-Chancellor, SPRC and Council on financial strategy and the financial performance of the University.  Chris is a member of the University Executive Board and is a Trustee of the Guild of Students. 

He is also responsible for aspects of research and innovation activities, including supporting research grant bids, the financial management of active projects and the activities of Alta Innovations, the University of Birmingham’s research commercialisation company.        

Biography

Chris joined the University as Director of Finance in December 2014.  He is a qualified Chartered Accountant, with extensive strategic financial management experience gained in the commercial sector.  He has been a Finance Director for over 15 years and also has experience of corporate finance, project management, internal and external audit.

He joined the University from GKN, where during his 15 year career he worked in a variety of roles, across the powder metallurgy, automotive and off-highway sectors.  His final role at GKN was as the Finance Director of the GKN Land Systems division. In addition to GKN, Chris has also worked for other international businesses including Cobham, HSBC and Price Waterhouse.

His wide ranging international experience has included financial responsibility for businesses in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia, and involved secondments overseas to the USA and Sweden. 

Chris is an alumnus of the University, having graduated with an Honours degree in Economics in 1988.
