Student Activities in the School of Engineering

Our students gain real-life exposure to engineering project management through UBRacing, the University’s Formula Student team, which designs, builds, and races a single seater race car in international competitions. They also have BrumEco Racing, the University’s Shell Eco-marathon team, who develop and test vehicles to compete internationally. Also, UBRobotics members are guided through programming, circuitry, electronics, and CAD and take part in competitions.

"The University of Birmingham has a thriving community of STEM societies for students to explore their passions and gain experience outside of the classroom. As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Society, I have benefited from engaging events, networking opportunities with industry experts, and leadership roles that have enhanced my CV. One of the things that's great about the STEM societies is that they offer so much more than just the classroom experience. You get to meet other students who are into the same stuff as you, which is always awesome."

Activate your future

With a Mechanical Engineering degree your opportunities are endless. You will develop the skills and knowledge which are highly valued by employers across a wide range of sectors. You will also benefit from:

  • Our shared first year and Integrated Design Project, where you learn about, and work with students across the Civil, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering departments, giving you a solid understanding of these three disciplines, while developing your team working skills ready for the working environment.
  • Opportunities to attend careers events and talks, and access to a range of employability services such as CV and interview prep, networking events, job listings and skills sessions.
  • Our supportive networks. Your personal tutor provides advice and guidance on your future career, and helps you to make the most of the opportunities available to you, alongside your study.

We also have our School of Engineering Employability Network, also known as SEEN, which will support you throughout your time with us. Every year we have a series of workshops on key employability skills, delivered by colleagues from industry. You will have the opportunity to explore different employment options and talk to professional engineers and recruiters at our careers fairs. If you’re considering a summer placement or year in industry, our direct recruitment scheme allows you to connect with a variety of employers who are recruiting specifically for students from within the School, with a single application. We can also support you with applications to opportunities across the whole spectrum of engineering employment.

"There are project modules in every semester for you to practice the theoretical knowledge you gain from other modules. These projects range from individual design projects to large-scale group projects where students from different degrees in the same cohort work together. These project modules are what I enjoy the most in my degree because you get to experience what it is like to work and manage engineering projects. You also get to create something that you can later add to your portfolio."
