Our Student Recruitment and Outreach teams help motivated and talented students discover whether the University of Birmingham is the right choice for them.
This includes working on a range of events with schools, colleges and UCAS, as well as here on our campus, such as open days and summer schools. The Outreach team’s main focus is to raise aspirations and improve attainment among local students, so we offer several well-regarded initiatives for schools and colleges in the West Midlands area.

These include visiting your school to deliver talks on higher education topics, tours of our campus, events for teachers and advisers and our popular Open Days. Kathryn provides administrative support for the work of the Student Recruitment office and assists in the organisation of the central services provided at Offer-holder Visit Days. Kathryn is responsible for the day-to-day management of the office’s Student Ambassador team, management of campus tours and assists in the organisation of conferences for teachers and careers advisers.

Ruth visits schools and colleges across the UK to support all aspects of the Higher Education decision making and application process by delivering talks and attending Careers and Higher Education events organised by schools. Her main focus is UK International Recruitment, working with Schools, Colleges and Foundation providers across the UK. Other projects that Ruth is involved with are; Kaplan College partnership, Norway and Switzerland recruitment, supporting on Middle East recruitment and activity and working with the International Officers on the work they undertake.
Head of Undergraduate Student Recruitment and Marketing
Adam is responsible for the strategic direction of the Universities' schools and colleges liaison development within the UK and Europe, working closely with colleagues across External Relations. This involves the management of a team of Student Recruitment Officers and Support Staff, who work with schools and colleges across the UK and Europe, giving presentations on Higher Education issues at schools and colleges; hosting events on campus and managing the production of resources aimed at providing students, teachers and parents with useful advice and information.

Jon is responsible for managing and organising the University’s Open Day events to which both school groups and individual prospective applicants and parents attend. Jon visits schools and colleges across the UK to support all aspects of the Higher Education decision making and application process by delivering talks and attending Careers and Higher Education events organised by schools. Jon also represents the University at UCAS Higher Education Exhibitions.

Linda is currently on maternity leave and her role is being covered by Alice McGowan. Linda works with schools and colleges across the UK delivering presentations and providing advice and guidance on a range of issues relating to higher education both on and off campus. Linda is also responsible for the organisation of the central activities run by the student recruitment department at applicant visit days. Other projects Linda is involved with include university discovery days, teacher and school communications and virtual recruitment activities.

Georgie provides support to the Student Recruitment Officers in the delivery of their projects including Open days and the universities virtual open day platform. Working with the Administration Manager on the recruitment and training of Student Ambassadors and providing project management on the organisation and delivery of the Teachers and Advisors’ conferences. Georgie visits schools and recruitment events across the UK, including UCAS, and acts as the key contact for EU agents and recruitment within the EU.

Katherine supports the Head of Undergraduate Recruitment and Marketing in the delivery of Student Recruitment activities in the UK. Her focus is on developing and managing relationships with schools and colleges and providing events and resources for teachers and careers advisers. She also visits schools and colleges to deliver presentations on a variety of Higher Education topics including researching and applying for university and hosting on campus visits.
Additionally Katherine manages the support staff and Assistant Student Recruitment Officer who provide support to the Student Recruitment Officers in the delivery of their projects and visits to schools and recruitment events across the UK.

Jessica provides administrative support to the Student Recruitment team and is the first point of contact for queries from schools. Jessica supports the Head of Undergraduate Recruitment and Officers in their activities with specific focus on school visits both on and off campus. Jessica coordinates and supports the University’s Undergraduate Open Days, as well as the University’s attendance at the UCAS Higher Education Exhibitions.

Ansar organises the Raising Aspirations in Secondary Education Programme (RAISE) which includes a number of activities aimed at years 7 to 11 students such as the Christmas Science Lectures, the Physics, Biology and Maths Big Quizzes, the Year 11 Achieve Conference, Year 8 Sunshine Lectures and the History Quest. He also delivers Aspiration Raising Days for school groups onto the campus, delivers presentations in schools and attends higher education and careers fairs. Ansar also has responsibility for the Academic Enrichment Programme, a year 12 residential programme in August for students living in the Midlands area and the Higher Education Insight Programme, a summer residential for students living outside of the Midlands area.

Shaheen is the lead Officer for the evaluation of the University’s Outreach strategy. This includes the evaluation of Outreach activity to assess impact, assess performance against targets and facilitate a culture of continual improvement. Shaheen is also responsible for the Routes to the Professions programme. The programme is delivered in partnership with the Schools of Medical and Dental Sciences, Law, Business, Engineering and the Universities Careers Network team to offer a comprehensive programme that provides students with a unique opportunity to get a real insight into studying medicine, dentistry, law, finance or engineering related courses at the University of Birmingham as well as receiving tailored advice, guidance and support at key points throughout their university application process.

Jess works on the A2B scheme as well as the Routes to the Professions (R2P) programme for year 12 students who aspire to study subjects such as Medicine, Dentistry and Engineering. She is part of a team that delivers support for young adult carers at the University and is the main contact for the Sarah Hawkins Award. Jess also runs campus visits for students in years 7-13 and delivers talks to help raise awareness of higher education options for young people across the West Midlands.

Kathy provides finance and administrative support to the team of Outreach Officers, manages the evaluation, monitoring and reporting of the team’s activities and administers the mentoring schemes. She maintains outreach contacts in local schools and colleges and is also responsible for updating the team’s webpages on the University’s website and managing stock of promotional and marketing materials. Lizzie is responsible for the University’s strategy for outreach work related to the widening participation and fair access agenda. Lizzie manages a team of Outreach Officers whose activities include the Access to Birmingham scheme and a comprehensive programme of outreach work with schools in the West Midlands including campus visits, progressive programmes of intervention with specific target cohorts, student mentoring, residential activity, work with teachers and advisors, transition activity preparing young people for higher education study and subject enrichment activity. Outreach activity is with students from year 6 to sixth form.

Rebecca manages the Access to Birmingham (A2B) scheme. The purpose of this scheme is to recruit the most able students from diverse backgrounds to the University from the Greater West Midlands area. Successful applicants on this programme take part in a variety of activities which ease the transition from school or college to university life. Rebecca gives presentations to sixth form students and teachers in order to support prospective university applicants.

Lucy is the operational lead for the Access to Birmingham (A2B) and Realising Opportunities Schemes at the University of Birmingham. She regularly visits schools and colleges to promote the programmes and coordinates the A2B Module for students participating in the A2B scheme. As part of the Outreach team Lucy also runs University visit days for schools and delivers presentations on other higher education topics in schools and colleges across the West Midlands. Ester works with pupils from as young as Years 5/6, introducing higher education to them through our Primary Engagement Programme, through to Years 12/13. Ester also conducts talks in schools and hosts school and college visits to campus. Ester also oversees our Forward Thinking Programme and runs the University’s UniFest and Your Future – Your Choice Year 10 summer residentials.

Andrew is one of two lead staff members on the Year 10 Summer Residential programme organised and coordinated at the University of Birmingham. He also supports the organisation and delivery of all Pathways to Birmingham programmes, including A2B, and the Realising Opportunities scheme. Claire is a main contact for the University's Masterclass Programme which is designed to stimulate enquiry into university learning and broaden knowledge of subject areas. Claire is also the lead contact for outreach activity for young carers. Claire also supports various outreach projects such as the Mentoring Scheme, A2B and Birmingham Link. Claire organises campus visits and presentations in local state schools to help raise awareness and aspiration for university study for students in years 7-13.

Andy is the University’s lead officer for the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP). The purpose of the NCOP is to support the most disadvantaged young people in England to progress into higher education. Locally, the University is working in collaboration with five other local universities to develop a wide range of activities to meet this aim.

Sophie plays a key role in supporting the coordination of the Aimhigher regional network whilst developing and delivering new outreach activity for the University of Birmingham. Sophie is responsible for producing and marketing new and sustainable resources for young people, parents and practitioners. As well as creating new outreach offer, Sophie also supports young people by hosting aspiration-raising days on campus, delivering presentations in schools and colleges and attending higher education/careers fairs.

Ambreen supports the lead officer with developing and delivering project activity, working with schools and colleges in developing a range of interventions and opportunities to support students as part of the NCOP programme.
