The School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham offers Year 3 students who are interested in pursuing a teaching career the opportunity to obtain teaching related experience. Through the 'Teaching Option' of the compulsory Year 3 Research Skills in Mathematics module, Year 3 students enrolled in the BSc and MSci Mathematics programmes have the opportunity to undertake a project in a subject related to mathematics teaching and education and to participate in a placement in a local school. In short, though the module:
- Students Carry out a 20 hour placement in a local school during either the autumn or spring terms.
- Students Research and write a project over the Autumn and Spring Terms.
- The project is fully supervised by members of staff within the School of Mathematics.
- Students can be allocated to a placement school however they are also free to identify their own.
Within the School of Mathematics we are aware that some of our students would like to proceed to a career in teaching after their degree, and this option allows them the opportunity to obtain valuable school-based experience as part of their undergraduate programme.
