Music & Nightlife

Birmingham doesn’t just have one sound; the city is full of different beats to suit all tastes. From huge venues to underground clubs with up-and-coming DJs, Birmingham caters for everyone.

If your favourite artists are constantly in the charts, the NEC, ICC and Barclaycard Arena all host big names and huge crowds, and at the O2 Academy you can hear everything from new artists to old favourites.

Many of our students spend their time in our fantastic surrounding boroughs in addition to the city centre. The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath is a great place to grab a drink with friends and listen to some fantastic up-and-coming acts. Find out more about Birmingham’s best music venues.

If you like unearthing new names and listening to undiscovered talent, The Custard Factory in Digbeth is a great place to find your new favourite artist or DJ. Digbeth is also the site of independent music stores if you’re looking for a place to buy your tunes on vinyl. But you will also discover there are plenty of bars and cafes that host intimate sofa-style gigs, or roof-top shows so you can sit back, relax and enjoy a drink or bite to eat at the same time.

For those whose tastes are more classical, Birmingham has a Symphony Hall in the centre of the city, home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

When the sun goes down, Birmingham doesn’t sleep. You will find there’s a huge selection of things to do in the evenings, no matter what your taste.

Birmingham has a wide variety of pubs and bars scattered across the city and its boroughs, from popular chains to independent cocktail bars, it’ll take you a while to try them all and there’s something to suit all tastes.

As a big student-friendly city, if clubs are your thing, you won’t be at a loss. Birmingham has several large clubs across the city, whatever your dancing style from house music and R’n’B to a throwback to 90’s pop and karaoke clubs, Birmingham is a city that caters for all. You’ve got the whole city to explore, and Broad St is perfect for a big night out!

If you’d rather a quieter evening, Birmingham also hosts comedy shows, poetry and spoken word events throughout the week, and there are plenty of pubs where you can spend the evening testing your knowledge in a quiz.
