Fundamentals of Biochemistry

Fundamental biochemical processes taking place inside cells.

  • BSc Biochemistry, BSc Biological Sciences, BSc Human Biology

Year One

10 Credits

The molecular nature of cellular component will be described and their structure related to their function in the cell, focusing particularly on proteins and enzymes. The cellular role and the regulation of metabolic pathways will be studied. The way in which cells are able to access and utilise the chemical energy present in foodstuffs will be described. In parallel, students will use independent learning texts to learn or revise fundamental topics, pH, pK, and energetics and redox potentials.

Lectures, seminars, practical classes and workshops, guided independent study

Exam (70%), Coursework (30%)
