Metabolism

Enzyme catalysis and regulation, metabolism of carbohydrates and vitamins, experimental techniques to study metabolic reactions.

Programmes

BSc Biochemistry

Level

Year One

10 Credits

In this module we shall describe techniques for isolating and purifying cellular components, and for studying protein action in the context of metabolism. We shall go on to discuss the metabolism of carbohydrates and pyruvate, and of fatty acids. At the same time, we shall consider energy requirements and generation in metabolism, and provide an introduction to the field of microbiology.

Throughout the module we shall emphasise the experimental techniques, the evidence and the unifying concepts behind our current understanding of metabolic processes.

Delivery

Lectures, Seminar, Tutorial, Practical Classes and workshops, Supervised time in studio/workshop, Guided independent study

Assessment

Exam (70%), Coursework (30%)
