Research Methods

Dissertation Preparation

School of History and Cultures

This module is designed to support you as you develop a topic on which to write your dissertation in your final year. It not only marks a crucial stage in your degree as a whole, but is also an important module in its own right. The Research Methods module will give you first hand experience of the work of a historian as you learn to identify and frame a valid, intellectually coherent research question; identify, find and consider what primary sources you will use and how you will use them; consult with a specialist historian in whatever area it is you wish to work on; present your planned project to your peers; write a literature review that analyses what historians have made of the same subject, and start preliminary work on your dissertation proper by conducting two weeks’ worth of research.
