Modern Languages additional Admissions information

When completing your UCAS application, please indicate your proposed subjects under ‘Further details’ in the ‘choices’ section of the application by using the following codes, separated by a space, as below.

Examples:

  1. If you wish to take French (at Advanced level) and German (at Beginners Level) on the Translation Studies pathway, you would enter: FrA GeA TS
  2. If you wish to take Spanish (at Advanced level), French (at Advanced level) and Portuguese (at Beginners level) on the Languages and Cultures Pathway, you would enter: SpA FrA PoB LC
  3. If you wish to take Italian (at Advanced level) on the Translation Studies pathway, you would enter: ItA TS

Cannot be taken as a single language in BA Modern Languages. For the English Language pathway either English Language, English Language and Literature or English Literature is desirable but not essential; if taken it will be required at grade A. For the English Literature pathway, A level English Literature or English Language and Literature grade A is required.

Translation Studies

TS

You may take 1 or 2 languages.

Important notes:

  • To take 3 languages, you must have achieved taken at least 2 at A-Level and achieved grades A*, A or B in those A-Levels.
  • German, Spanish, Russian and Italian may be studied at beginner level (if you have not taken it a A-Level) or at Advanced Level (provided you have it at Advanced Level).
  • French may be studied at post-GCSE or at Advanced Level (provided you have GCSE / A Level French).
  • You will be able to change the languages to be studied / number of languages / pathway that you intend to study up until the point of registration (provided you meet the entry criteria for the alternative language and space is available).
  • The following are prohibited combinations: Italian & Portuguese, Italian & Mandarin Chinese, German & English Language, post-A-Level Russian & beginners Spanish.
