Course Type

Assessment: 2000 word essay – specialist area chosen by you

This module will introduce you to the scope, focus, concepts, theories and controversies of the emerging field of Medical Humanities. Building upon this, you will explore topics such as the description of psychopathology in autobiographical narratives; the representation of madness in fictional narrative and feature films; and the value of poetry, biography, letters, and journals in medical education. You will identify an area of particular interest for independent in-depth study which will be assessed by a 2000- word essay (submitted in late January). Individual supervisions will be available for students who need guidance in terms of direction and defining topics for their essay.
