Global Health

Year 2 Semester 1

Credits 20

This module places the health of populations in a global context. It will build on concepts introduced earlier in the Public Health BSc, such as improving health and achieving equity, but with a focus on health for all people worldwide.

This is a broad module that covers communicable diseases such as Ebola and HIV/AIDS, non-communicable disease (NCDs) that are an increasing burden in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), global issues such as climate change and healthcare problems such as drug resistant bacteria.

There is a strong theme of social justice and equity that runs throughout the module. The global issues described above need to be placed into the context of the unequal world we live in and the influence of power that leads to the current pattern of disease globally.

The module examines the role of government and non-government organisations to alleviate the health problems that countries face.
