Medicine Foundation Pathway

In order to be eligible to study our MLGS Foundation pathway for Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) please be aware that you will need to meet additional entry requirements and eligibility criteria. Please note that we are unable to consider applicants who are already studying qualifications that would usually be eligible for direct entry to the Medicine programme, including but not limited to A levels, IB, APs, Canadian high school diploma, Indian curriculum.

Academic requirements

China

85% including Chemistry and Biology.

Indonesia

8.0/80% including Biology and Chemistry.

Middle East

Thanawiya with an overall score of 95% including Chemistry and Biology.

Nigeria

WAEC with a minimum of 5 A1 grades including Chemistry and Biology.

Taiwan

An average of 85% in the Senior High School Leaving Certificate. To include 85% in Biology and Chemistry. We will consider students for entry to the Birmingham Foundation Academy who have completed their first year at a recognised institution in the Taiwan and obtained good grades in all subject areas including Chemistry and Biology.

Thailand

Certificate of Secondary Education/Maw 6 with a minimum grade point of 3 (80%). To include a grade point of 3 (80%) in Biology and Chemistry.

Turkey

Turkish High School Diploma from selected schools (see school list accepted for direct entry with Turkish High School Diploma) with an overall GPA of 75/100 in year 12 to include 75/100 in Biology and 75/100 in Chemistry in year 12 subjects.

Vietnam

8.0/80% including Biology and Chemistry.

UKCAT

There are two options for the UKCAT:

  • Option 1: Achieve an overall UKCAT score of 2620
  • Option 2: Complete the UKCAT in the same year of commencing the Foundation programme

English language

Demonstrate proof of English language with a minimum IELTS 6.0.

Application deadline

You must submit your application by the BIA application deadline of 5th August 2019 for consideration for the Medicine Foundation Pathway.

Progression requirements

In order to progress from our Foundation pathway to the Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme, you will be required to meet the following conditions:

  • Achieve an overall average of 70% in your Foundation pathway.
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7.0.
  • If option 1 is used (above): Formal confirmation of your UKCAT result.
  • If option 2 is used (above): Achieve a threshold UKCAT score, which is defined in a competitive application process among all international medicine applicants. For guidance the threshold score for receiving an interview in 2018 was 2620.
  • Complete either paid or unpaid work experience in the health field. You are strongly advised to gain relevant experience prior to commencing the Foundation pathway.
  • Complete a successful Medicine interview during the Foundation year. Please note, you will be guaranteed a Medicine interview if you meet the requirements above and have indicated you would like to progress to our Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme.

There is no guarantee of automatic progression for students who are successfully admitted to the Foundation programme who have indicated they would like to progress to the Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) programme. All students wishing to progress must satisfy the conditions outlined above.

Students who do not satisfy the conditions above but meet our standard progression requirements will be eligible to progress onto an alternative course in a related subject.
