The physiological adaptations that take place due to exposure to challenging environmental conditions are fascinating and provide clear insight into normal physiology and homeostatic mechanisms. The module will cover three main areas: altitude, pressure (diving), cold/hot environments. In each section of the module the basic physiological adaptations will be described before exploring challenges that are imposed on the human body during exercise in these conditions. Each section will have seminars and a practical component.
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Describe environmental factors that influence body homeostasis
- Describe physiological adaptations to extreme environmental conditions at rest
- Describe physiological adaptations to extreme environmental conditions during exercise
