Green Heart Festival Summer Season

The Green Heart has transformed the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston campus. Its completion and launch are marked with a summer season of events with the theme Celebration.

The following activities will be taking place in and around the Green Heart in June, July and August 2019.

Arts and Science Sculpture Commission
Visit our outdoor display case and take a look at scale models produced by our four sculpture commission finalists – Andrew Gillespie, Hipkiss & Graney, Intervention Architecture and Juneau Projects.

Date: Friday 7th June - Friday 11th October 2019, all day.
Location: Sculptures displayed in the Green Heart (above Cuore). Exhibition in the Rotunda in the Aston Webb Building.

Exhibition: History of the University of Birmingham
The history of the University of Birmingham illustrated through photographs from the University heritage archive collection - from its roots in Mason Science College to the unification of all teaching on the Edgbaston campus in the 1960s.

Date: Friday 7th June 2019 - Friday 31st January 2020, 9am - 6pm.
Location: Main Library Atrium.

Exhibition: Unfiltered Lives
We are telling the stories of real people whose lives have positively changed as a result of our research. Through photography and compelling stories, Unfiltered Lives goes beneath the surface to the heart of why our researchers do what they do.

Date: Saturday 8th June - Friday 21st June 2019
Location: The lawn by Law in Chancellor's Court

One Minute Movie Competition 2018/19: How Green is Your Heart
Watch entries to the Department of Film and Creative Writing's annual One Minute Movie competition. This year's entrants have created films in response to the theme 'how green is your heart?' and the competition winner will be revealed on the night. 

Date: Wednesday 12th June, 6pm-7.30pm

Walk and Draw in the Green Heart
Take a 30-minute walk across campus and make speedy sketches along the way of its landscape, buildings and people.

Date: Wednesday 12th June, 12 noon - 12.30pm
Location: Meet at the Barber Institute of Fine Art

Sculpt-Tour
Celebrating health and wellbeing in the Green Heart, UB Sport & Fitness and Research and Cultural Collections present a sculpture tour with a difference. Nurture body and mind in this sculptural exercise programme, which responds directly to the shapes and forms of a selection of sculptures in the campus art collection. Don't forget your trainers!

Live Art for the Green Heart #1
Radage Hardaker works with University of Birmingham Drama and Theatre Arts students to create a unique piece of live art with the theme Celebration.

Date: Monday 17th June, time to be confirmed.
Location: The Green Heart

Shakespeare in the Green Heart
Square Eye Student Theatre Group presents a series of performances of Shakespeare's As You Like It.

Date: Tuesday and Wednesday 18th and 19th June, 2pm-3pm
Location: The Green Heart (by a large tree in University Square decorated with bunting)

Planetary Health Workshop
This workshop will explore the global planetary health landscape and investigate existing and future research synergies and linkages between these universal themes of health, environmental and sustainable development.

Date: Monday 24th June, 9am-4pm

An art exhibition celebrating the power of imagination to promote self-discovery and healing.

Celebrate Sculpture
The University of Birmingham is home to many sculptures which are on display across campus for the enjoyment of all. The campus art collection includes sculptures by acclaimed artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi and Jacob Epstein. You will be introduced to artworks which are celebratory in nature and which make the campus a beautiful space to learn, work and relax in.
