In early 2016 London Economics calculated the economic impact of the University of Birmingham on the city of Birmingham and the West Midlands region in 2014–15 (following a similar economic impact study in 2011–12). This page outlines the headline findings of the study.

The study shows that the University of Birmingham:
- generates £3.5bn every year to the economy;
- supports 15,545 jobs in the West Midlands region, with almost one in 50 jobs in Birmingham depending upon the University;
- has 34,160 students, more than 100,000 online learners and 300,000 alumni across the globe;
- would bring a further £1 million to the UK economy with the addition of eight undergraduate international students staying for a duration of three years in Birmingham;
- has more than 22,000 pupils participating in the University's outreach activity each year;
- In 2014-15 the University supported its students and graduates to start more than 50 new businesses;
- had almost 1,700 people, who completed a programme with the University in 2014-15, move on to work in the healthcare sector;
- has a research and knowledge transfer activity that is worth £885 million. Every £1 million invested by UK Research Councils generates an additional £12 million for the economy.
