From Brum to Bakes
- Bramall Music Building - Elgar Concert Hall (R12 on campus map)
- Saturday 19 October 2019 (18:00-19:00)
University of Birmingham alumna, Candice Brown, returns to her alma mater to discuss her road from “Brum to Bakes”.
Candice's talk will cover her childhood upbringing in the pubs run by her parents, spending time in north London with her grandparents before settling in Bedfordshire for upper school. She will touch on her own school life and discuss all things A'Levels. It will examine her three years at the University of Birmingham, how she left university unsure of what she wanted to do, trying various jobs, including as air hostess and gym receptionist, before taking on teacher training to which her degree set her up perfectly.
Having baked on and off most of her life, especially with her nan, it was following an illness and a fairly stressful time she began to really take baking to the next level.
Candice told us she can't wait to discuss her journey with us and to go into conversation about all aspects of it; from feeling not quite good enough to feeling on top of the world, to still being unsure on how she got to be the winner of the 2016 Great British Bake Off. She assures us that this talk will make you laugh with anecdotes of her time in the GBBO tent, quashing misconceptions of what really goes on during bake-off and her weird, crazy completely amazing life over the last three years!
