Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships internal application process

Please see below the details of the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships call, for Fellowships to be held in the College of Arts and Law at the University of Birmingham commencing between 1 September 2016 and 1 May 2017.

The deadline for applications to Leverhulme is 4.00pm on Thursday 10 March 2016.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with a track record of excellent research, but who have not yet held an established academic appointment. Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, but who have a proven record of research. Appointments are dependent on the successful award of the Leverhulme Fellowship. The expectation is that Fellows should undertake a significant piece of publishable work during their tenure.

This scheme requires 50% contribution from the host institutions; therefore, support from the College of Arts and Law at the University of Birmingham is required before an application can be formally submitted.  Please note that applications that will result in the applicant moving institution are favoured by the Trust.

The internal deadline for the required institutional approval process is Monday 25 January 2016.  Interested applicants are asked to provide to Suzie Hayman in the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office (s.hayman@bham.ac.uk):

  • Their name and current institution
  • A one page CV with either the date of submission of their doctorate or the date of their doctoral viva (see attachment for eligibility rules)
  • A summary of their intended research.  The summary should be concise (one paragraph) and give a clear indication of the research
  • A brief statement on the strength of the proposal from an academic member of staff (sponsor) who is familiar with both the applicant and the intended research

Decisions on institutional approval will be communicated by Monday 1 February 2016. Please note that, if successful, applicants will be invited to formally submit their completed applications by Thursday 3 March 2016.  This will allow Heads of Department and the University of Birmingham’s Finance Office sufficient time to complete their formal approval processes before the Leverhulme deadline of 10 March.

Candidates external to the University of Birmingham are welcome to apply, provided they secure a suitable sponsor within the College. The College Research and Knowledge Transfer office is happy to offer advice on this. They can be contacted at colcal-c-calrkt@adf.bham.ac.uk
