Senior Manager for Digital Product Design, the LEGO Group
I lead a team of digital product designers in the LEGO Group's Consumer and Shopper Engagement Team. We look after areas like LEGO.com/service, the VIP loyalty shopper experience, and the service agent experience. Day-to-day I help set digital strategy for my area, look after the careers of designers in my team, and generally make sure our teams are balancing user and business needs.
What’s the best thing about what you’re doing now?
I get to play with LEGO bricks and it counts as work!
How has your career developed since graduating?
I originally started working in tech consulting at Deloitte. This opened a lot of doors for me and I was lucky enough to try a number of different roles, including software development and product management before finally settling on user experience design. I was also able to explore many locations through work and even moved to Toronto, Canada for three years! After Deloitte, I joined the hyper growth start-up Cazoo for a year. This was an eye-opening experience where I was able to learn about the extremely fast paced nature of start-ups and scale-ups. I understood how funding rounds worked, experienced an IPO, and helped launch many new greenfield products.
Why did you originally apply to Birmingham?
It was one of the few universities that allowed flexibility between a joint honours degree to focus on what interested you the most. It was also a fantastic place that offered a stunning campus but within close proximity to a huge city waiting to be explored.
What are your fondest memories of the University?
Solving problems together with students on my course in the computer science labs, going to many socials, and taking part in societies!
Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities as a student?
I was a radio host on BURN FM, the University's student radio channel. Really recommend it to anyone who might be thinking about doing it!
What advice would you give to students?
It's cliché, but enjoy it! Your skills are really in demand in industry and you'll quickly move from solving problems to dealing with people, which isn't always easy. There are so many opportunities to get involved in things outside your course at UoB, try and make time to do these, it'll be worth it in the long run!
