I run the finance department of a $500m turnover region. Managing a team of 56 covering payroll, billing, cash collection and treasury management, tax and statutory accounting as well as providing strategic input to board level commercial decisions.

What’s the best thing about what you are doing now?

No one day is the same and whilst my finance knowledge is used, every day the biggest part of my role is built on relationships and managing people.

How has your career developed since graduating from the University of Birmingham?

When I first left Birmingham I did an internship with Investec Asset Management before moving on to complete my ACCA qualification. I started as a Finance Assistant but progressed rapidly as I quickly passed my exams, moving onto Management Accountant, Financial Controller and now Director.

What motivates you?

Career progression, recognition and feeling of accomplishment are important to me.

Why did you originally apply to Birmingham?

The campus was excellent and Birmingham was, and is, a top university for Mathematics. It also had great sports facilities which was very appealing.

What are your fondest memories of the University?

Being Captain of the Judo team, great freshers’ nights and making lifelong friends

Did you get involved in any extracurricular activities as a student?

I played freshers rugby and captained the Judo team. I am World Powerlifting Champion 2019 and the University now has a fantastic powerlifting team.

How did your time at university help you start your career?

I developed an independent mindset at university which allowed me to learn independently this really helped early in my career getting through professional exams.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I’m a World and European powerlifting champion, just worth a mention????

“Attend the lectures! Do the work but remember to socialise, the biggest failing I’ve seen in others during my career has been the amount of super bright people who can’t progress because they can’t manage others. Be a people person not just a ‘brain’.”
