PhD student, University College London
MSc Advanced Computer Science

I am currently doing a PhD in Medical Imaging at University College London, focusing on neuroimaging and computational modelling.

Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
What particularly pushed me to apply to the MSc Advanced Computer Science was the opportunity to do research (through the mini-research projects) as well as to improve my knowledge on certain subjects I was interested in (through taught modules). I believe this masters is unique from this point of view, offering students the chance to do research from the beginning of the course, rather than only during the summer.

What do you think are the best points of your course?
The unique opportunity to combine research with taught modules all throughout the academic year. I believe this allows students to get a taste for research and decide whether they would like to pursue an academic career.

What's the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
Having visited several campuses in the UK, I believe the University of Birmingham has one of the best. In addition to that, I really enjoyed being part of the School of Computer Science, where I felt like there was always support available whenever I needed it. This helped to facilitate my learning and make the most of my course.

What's your highlight of your time at University?
I have really enjoyed being able to do a mini-research project combining machine learning and astrophysics. The range of research areas in the School of Computer Science is extremely wide and I believe everyone will be able to find a project they are very passionate about.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
I believe the MSc Advanced Computer Science offers a broad range of modules from different areas of computer science. Therefore, if you are not sure what area of computer science you would like to pursue further in your career (which was the case for me), try going to as many lectures as possible and you will soon get an idea.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?
I think the most important thing is to know that there is a lot of support available for you as a student. Lecturers are very approachable and so are the other students. If you are struggling with anything, just ask and you will be surprised with the amount of support you will get.
