In his Inaugural Lecture, Professor Peter Tiňo will chart the rather surprising path that led him to become a blend of computer scientist, mathematician and physicist, working in the domains of complex systems, and what is now confusingly termed artificial intelligence-machine learning.
Peter will introduce his research, highlighting the results that have surprised him the most. He will also share his excitement about what being a "machine learner" has to offer, as well as his experiences of working alongside inspiring scientists and friends in a variety of scientific disciplines from astrophysics to molecular biology.
Over the course of his lecture, Peter will propose that artificial intelligence-machine learning, much like mathematics, has the potential to become an underlying theoretical framework for advancing diverse fields of science. He will also suggest that cross-disciplinary research offers a chance to bring back the ideal of a "renaissance" mind and argue about the importance of art and playfulness in academic life.
Peter Tiňo is Professor of Complex and Adaptive Systems at the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of over 160 research articles in the areas of dynamical systems, machine learning, natural computation and fractal geometry. Peter has been awarded three outstanding Journal Paper of the Year awards and the Head of School's Excellence in Teaching Award.
