Poynting Physical Society Update – March 2015
After a successful first term for the Poynting Physical Society with demand high for events, the second term has continued in the same fashion as even more "PPS records" have been broken!
Following intense investigating of many different venues for the PPS Spring Ball, the stunning Birmingham Council House was decided upon to be the host venue. After a few weeks promoting "A Night at the Oscars", we started selling in earnest on 2 February, setting an unprecedented and, even for the most optimistic of organisers, unbelievable record of selling all initial 220 tickets in less than an hour! Included in this was a record 24 lecturers and plus ones, which promises to make the event extra memorable. After securing an extra 11 tickets, the raffle to determine the recipients was out of 35 people, showing the incredible demand for the event!
Alongside the success of the Ball, various other events have been hugely popular. At the start of term 100 physicists hit Selly Oak's finest pubs for the welcome back "Pub Golf" bar crawl, and the bi-annual quiz had another 100+ turnout. We also took 35 students to see the fantastic 5* production of Oppenheimer at Stratford-upon-Avon where we had the pleasure of meeting the writer Tom Morton-Smith beforehand to ask him questions. We are keen to run more of these due to the great feedback from those who went, and would love to turn it into a PPS staple event.
Later in the year, we are looking to collaborate with AstroSoc, first taking people to see Holst's The Planets by the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra in the Bramall Music Building, followed by an observing session courtesy of AstroSoc.
