We’ve got a number of trips planned for this semester and we hope you’ll be interested in joining us:

Kidderminster Traction Maintenance Depot – Wednesday 17 January

We will be visiting Kidderminster Traction Maintenance Depot at the Severn Valley Railway for a guided tour. We’ll see first-hand how the Severn Valley Railway maintains its heritage diesel fleet in this modern facility. We’re meeting at University station at 1pm, get the train to Kidderminster and will return in the late afternoon/early evening. Usually we go to the pub after a RailSoc event and you’re more than welcome to join us! For this visit you will need to buy your own rail tickets to get to and from Kidderminster which costs £5.80 with a railcard. If you would like to go on this visit, please email Matthew Teller on mmt682@student.bham.ac.uk.

Crewe Heritage Centre Including Exeter West Signal Box – Saturday 10 February

We’ve have a private visit to Crewe Railway Heritage Centre which includes operating sessions in the ‘Exeter West Signal Box’ where we’ll get a hands-on experience pulling the levers and ringing the bells to simulate the signalling of trains. The centre is closed to the public on this day meaning RailSoc will be the only visitors on site.  Visitors are not normally allowed to operate the signal box so this visit really is something special! We'll meet at University station for about 9am and getting back in the early evening. The visit will require a donation of £10 to the ‘Exeter West Group’ which can be paid in cash on the day and will be used by the group to continue the preservation of the signal box. You will also need to buy your own rail tickets to get to and from Crewe, the cheapest way to do this is to buy a ‘West Midlands Day Ranger’ ticket which costs £16.90 with a railcard and must be bought from a ticket office. To join us on this visit please email Matthew Teller on mmt682@student.bham.ac.uk.
