CSS has gone from strength to strength this year and the Society is providing a wide range of events for members. President Diana Murgulet tells us more.

Since the new committee took over in March 2014, the society has grown in terms of members – we have doubled our numbers and welcomed 145 people into the CSS Community and we held our first event with the End of the Year BBQ to celebrate the end of exams.

With an enthusiastic new committee (with more reps than before) we decided to focus on three main aspects for the year ahead: sports, socials and careers. Above all, our main goal was to create a sense of community around our society. Following the summer break we had a Freshers’ Pub Night and a Freshers’ Buffet at Ming Moon to welcome the new students and help them meet other society members. To encourage the sense of community, by signing up to CSS, our members were given a membership card that offers discounts to our events and selected restaurants in Selly Oak, and we have also designed and ordered Computer Science hoodies.

CSS has had a great year with just over 20 activities running. We elected a sports rep and ran a football tournament, a badminton event, a basketball afternoon, a bowling night and a laser tag event. We ran a quiz against lecturers with one of our sponsors, Futureboard, and a careers workshop. Our members joined us for a movie night in the Guild of Students and two cinema trips: one to see The Imitation Game and one to see The Theory of Everything. We had two big events: our Christmas meal at the Goose and the Computer Science Society Ball, which was held at The Jam House, where we enjoyed a night of live music, good food and fun. Among other things, we ran LAN parties, bake sales for charities and an international meal. We have now elected a new committee (with the president being the founder of BrumHack) and we look forward to seeing the direction in which the society will grow.
