Student Profile - Emmanuel Johnson

Emmanuel"The best points are the professors. They are experts in Robotics and make themselves accessible"

MSc Robotics, School of Computer Science

Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I applied to the MSc Robotics programme because it allowed me to study specifically what I was interested in. Most schools around the world do not offer degrees in Robotics. Typically, students pursue a degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with a speciality in robotics. By studying robotics as a speciality, you may not get the depth and breadth of understanding of the field as you would choosing a course in robotics.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

The professors. They are experts in Robotics and they make themselves accessible. This allows you to gain the knowledge not offered in textbooks or online. They provide the support and insight I think all students need when trying to build their knowledge-base in any domain of robotics.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

One of the best things is the international community of students. I have course mates from Greece, Germany, Jordan, Nigeria, China, Brazil, France, Spain and other parts of the world. Each brings a unique method of problem solving and insight based on their background that makes the experience even more enriching.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

Honestly, as cliche as it may sound, the biggest highlight and benefit the University has provided is allowing me to venture outside of my comfort zone. Birmingham has been an unique experience that has pushed me in each and every lecture to understand how and most importantly why. Whether through assignments, random conversation with course mates or meetings with professors, I was provided with different ideas and insight that caused me to question my own assumptions and build more solid arguments for my reasoning or reconsider them.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

If you are looking to work and learn from some of the best, then this is the place for you. Understand that obtaining a MSc in Robotics will not be easy but will prepare you to tackle some interesting robotics problems. Through the degree programme make sure you take the time to explore the city and network with course mates as well. That also adds immense value to the programme.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

Go for it! I can guarantee that you will enjoy your time studying at the University of Birmingham. This has been one of the best decisions I have made and I hope to hear you say the same.
