Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I had originally thought to apply for a course in computer graphics, as I was interested in pursuing a career in the game or film industry at the time. In the end I was convinced by one of my 6th form tutors to apply for a course that spanned a broader range of computing topics, and I'm very glad he did. After attending an open day, I felt Birmingham offered a very strong programme and promptly made it my first choice.

What were the best points of your course at the University?

The School of Computer Science has a very strong research presence. This has spawned a diverse range of taught modules that gives students a chance to delve into many different areas of computing. The quality of the teaching is excellent, and I owe a great deal to the lecturers that have inspired myself and others to pursue careers in academia. There is also a strong sense of community within the School, as evidenced by the highly successful Computer Science Society (of which I was formerly president).

What's the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The best thing is its fantastic campus. There really is no shortage of places to eat, drink, socialise, exercise or study.

What was the highlight of your time at the University?

I would say my highlight was building an intelligent(ish) robot out of Lego, which whilst stressful at times was great fun and an invaluable learning experience.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

My advice would be to try out some modules in the 2nd and 3rd years that aren't obvious choices. You never know what might pique your interest, and you can always change your choices!
