PERCAT Rep for the School of GEES

What is your academic background and your current research field?

I am a Research Fellow in School of  Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES) with a particular interest in freshwater systems. My research is split into two key areas:

  1. assessing the impacts of environmental change (i.e. glacier retreat and droughts) on the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems, and;
  2. unravelling dissolved organic matter and nutrient dynamics in anthropogenically modified river systems (i.e. urban and agricultural).

The work I undertake is primarily empirically based and involves the use of in-situ monitoring across environmental gradients in real ecosystems, alongside mesocosm scale experimentation. Prior to pursuing a career in academia I worked in environmental consultancy.

What is your role as a PERCAT Rep and how can postdocs in your school contact you?

I became PERCAT rep for GEES in January 2018 and primarily act as a bridge between postdocs in the school and the wider PERCAT committee. All PERCAT reps help develop and guide the extensive program of training courses and events offered by PERCAT.  During the committee meetings it is possible to propose ideas or raise specific issues that postdocs within GEES may have.

What do you feel are the benefits of the PERCAT programme for postdocs and what do you feel have been the benefits to you from being a postdoc rep?

The  PERCAT programme helps postdocs and Early Career Researchers meet likeminded individuals from across the university through structured events and training courses. Many of these courses are focused on personal development, particularly career development, and provide extremely useful information for those hoping to pursue a career within or outside academia.
