Professor Una Martin

Professor Una Martin, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Dean of Birmingham Medical School (from Sept 2019), Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor Equalities

Professor Una Martin will describe the challenges and rewards of a career in Clinical Pharmacology and how the combination of clinical work, teaching, research and leadership has provided entertainment and variety at every stage.

Core to her clinical and research interests are the diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure which remains a major cause of premature death from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and strokes. She has worked closely with colleagues in the British and Irish Hypertension Society to improve the care of patients with high blood pressure and she is delighted to be taking up the role of president of the Society in the autumn.

She will describe how early local leadership opportunities in therapeutics encouraged to her to take on and develop the Athena SWAN strategy in the College of MDS which evolved into her current role as Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equalities. She will describe how she has developed an ambitious strategy to change the culture of the University so that we can truly aspire to being an inclusive institution where all our staff and students can thrive.

Finally, she will outline her vision for the new Birmingham Medical School as she looks forward to taking up the role of Dean.
