Professor Alan McNally.
You are invited to attend the inaugural lecture of Professor Alan McNally: 'Viruses to bacteria and back again: A scientific journey plagued by good fortune'.
Professor McNally, Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, grew up in Paisley and obtained his degree in Microbiology at University of Glasgow followed by a PhD at University of Edinburgh.
In this lecture Professor McNally will talk about his career path that led to him working on the frontline of containing the H5N1 avian influenza epidemic in 2004. He then went on to become a lecturer working in the field of genome sequencing using this method to study how the pathogenic plague bacteria Yersinia evolve, and how antimicrobial resistance evolves in bacteria.
Finally, he will talk about his prominent role in the UK’s Covid testing efforts, and some key lessons he learned from this exciting but exhausting experience.
