The University of Birmingham has risen an impressive nine points in the latest world research rankings, placing it in 112th place among the top 500 global research universities.

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities 2014, also known as the NTU Ranking, ranked Birmingham ninth overall in the UK. This is a rise from tenth in 2013 and places Birmingham ahead of Nottingham, Durham, and Warwick.

Released by the National Taiwan University, this ranking of the top 500 universities worldwide evaluates the performance of scientific papers. It is based entirely on statistics that reflect three major performance criteria; research productivity, research impact, and research excellence.

The University of Birmingham, named University of the Year for 2013-14, has also been ranked 77th worldwide for Clinical Medicine.

The NTU Ranking follows a host of recent accolades, including The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015 placing Birmingham 15th overall, up from 16th last year. Earlier this year the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, placed Birmingham overall within the top 150 universities globally.

Commenting on the results, University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Eastwood said: ‘We are delighted with the results of this year’s NTU Ranking, which reflects Birmingham’s commitment to research that is recognised as world-leading in terms of originality and distinctiveness, significance and rigour.

‘We continue to develop our world-class university for the future and have committed £500 million to building new facilities on our campus over the next five years and are continuing to attract outstanding researchers that make a major impact on global society.’
