Final year undergraduate student Edward Newton has won the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSE) and Dentsply Sirona national Dental Clinical Skills Competition 2017.

Ed Newton - national winner 2

Edward beat 15 other final year students, each representing their dental school from around the UK, at the competition, which was held at the college in Edinburgh at the end March 2017. Edward, like his fellow competitors, had fought to represent his dental school by winning the local heat, which was held during autumn last year.

The national competition saw Edward beat the other competitors through a process of gruelling clinical tests in an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) format. Each station presented simulated clinical challenges such as preparing a root canal, placing an implant and performing laparoscopic surgery.

Edward was announced the winner by Professor William Saunders, Dean of the Dental Faculty at the RCSE. After he completes his finals Edward can enjoy his victory at an all-expenses paid four-day trip to Dentsply Sirona’s Restorative Forum in Konstanz, Germany, in June 2017.
