Citizens UK organises communities to act together for power, social justice and the common good. It is the home of community organising in the UK. Community organising is democracy in action: winning victories that change lives and transform communities.
Citizens UK: Birmingham is a diverse civil society alliance bringing together education, community, trade union and faith-based organisations in the city committed to using community organising to generate collective power for social change. Citizens UK: Birmingham are involved in a series of local campaigns on issues ranging from the living wage to community safety to health and social care. In March 2015, as part of the Citizens UK General Election campaign, Citizens UK: Birmingham convened an Assembly here at the University of Birmingham in our Great Hall, bringing together over 600 people to call for the UK to revive its proud tradition of offering Sanctuary to the most vulnerable.
By taking an active role in Citizens UK: Birmingham, we can we can work to increase the power of communities to participate in public life, bring our research to bear on the issues impacting on local community and support our students to engage in local projects, placements and research. In the months since we became a Principal Member, colleagues have already taken part in community organising training, joined action teams and developed placement opportunities for our students.
