The University of Birmingham is among the top 50 places in the world to study in seven subjects, according to a prestigious global survey of universities.
The latest release of the QS World University Rankings by Subjects demonstrates the University of Birmingham’s continued strength across a number of subject areas, with 27 subjects ranking within the world top 100 and 7 subjects in the top 50.
The 2018 results draw on the opinions of more than 74,000 academics and 44,000 employers, and continues to demonstrate the importance of participation in the surveys to ensure that the league tables reflect a diverse, fair and accurate opinion of University reputation.
The academic and employer surveys are now open (March 2018) and available online for participation: the results of which will determine the 2019 subject rankings.
Ranked 5th in the world for Sport, Birmingham has a reputation for providing a world-class training environment, not only for its own international student-athletes, but also for hosting international athletes ahead of world sporting events. The University will also be providing competition venues during Birmingham 2022 following the city’s successful bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This year’s ratings places six other subject areas at Birmingham into the Top 50: Education, English Language & Literature, Linguistics, Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies, Development Studies and Dentistry.
Researchers within the School of Dentistry, which is ranked 19th, have close links with global industry and are trialling new products with health impacts far beyond dental issues, as well as conducting research into understanding the pathobiology of oral infectious and inflammatory diseases as well as developing therapies for oral cancer.
To produce the rankings this year, over 22 million papers were analysed, producing close to 200 million citations. 1,130 institutions have been ranked across 5 subject areas.
