Ed Smith CBE is the former Global Assurance COO and Strategy Chairman of PwC. He retired in 2007 from a highly successful 30 year career with PwC where he held many leading Board and top client roles in the UK and globally as a Senior Partner. He now enjoys a portfolio of Board roles in education, health, thought leadership and sustainable development as well as a number of commercial interests.
He is Chairman of NHS Improvement which has oversight and regulatory responsibility for all NHS Trusts in England and of the Crown Commercial Service, which provides centralised commercial and procurement services for government and the UK public sector. He is also the lead non-executive director of the Department for Transport where his focus is on major infrastructure and is an Inquiry member of the Competition & Markets Authority. In addition he is a Member of Council & Treasurer of Chatham House and the Chairman of Caterham School.
Ed has been a member of Council since 2009 and Pro-Chancellor since 2010. He is Chair of the Membership Committee and currently serves on the Strategy, Planning and Resources Committee and Remuneration Committee. The University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2015.
