Micro Employability Courses - Transcript

The purpose of this Micro-CPD is to explain the creation of Careers Network’s Micro Employability Courses, and how they can be embedded into your programme.

In collaboration with our academic and employer partners, we created five employability-related asynchronous online courses in Canvas, on the topics of Creating a Professional Profile, Employability in and Beyond Your Degree, Managing Group Dynamics, Responding to Feedback and Speculative Approaches for Placements. Each course is comprised of written, video and interactive content, and include links to LinkedIn Learning, in order to encourage the use of this resource.

Since the pilot year in 2020, these courses have supported teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and have been included as both optional and compulsory elements of modules. In addition to being used within degree programmes, the MECs have been incorporated within a number of co- and extra-curricular activities, mainly focused on enrichment.

Each course takes up to four hours to complete, and could either be part of the independent study component of a module, or used in ‘flipped classroom’, where students could complete them in advance of a workshop or lecture.  They are intended to be roughly equivalent to a two-hour workshop with independent study.
