Airport collection service

During the arrivals period in September, we provide a free airport collection service for students from Birmingham (BHX) and London Heathrow (LHR) airports.

What you need to know

How much luggage can I bring with me?

Generally, we can accommodate one large and two small pieces of luggage per student, so you could bring a check-in sized suitcase, and a carry-on size bag plus a handbag or small backpack. You will need to be able to move your luggage by yourself.

We cannot guarantee that we can fit any extra luggage on board the coach, and in the event we were unable to, you would need to make your own arrangements to have your luggage shipped to your accommodation. There are luggage transfer services available at the airport.

Unfortunately it is not possible for luggage to be shipped and stored on campus - it will need to go to your accommodation address.

What happens when I arrive?

When you arrive, you should pass through security and baggage reclaim in the usual way. Find out more about arriving in the UK.

If you are arriving from a red list country, you will be directed to the transport to your quarantine hotel by a government representative. The package includes transport back to the airport, at which point you may join the airport collection service.

The meet and greet point for the service will be at the bottom of the arrivals ramp at Birmingham International Airport (BHX) and in arrivals at Terminal 3 at London Heathrow (LHR).

You will be met by our Welcome Assistants, who will be wearing bright blue tshirts. They will gather you and other students together, and direct you to the coach (bus), which is provided by Johnson's. The coach will be exclusively for University of Birmingham students, and will travel directly from the airport to campus.

There may be a period of time to wait before the coach departs, so that we can make sure we have collected everyone we are expecting and ensured that everyone is ready to depart. A Welcome Assistant will travel back to campus with you and will be able to answer questions you may have.

Can I bring a guest with me?

No, we are only able to transport current University of Birmingham students. If you will be under the age of 18 at the time of travel, or need a carer for accessibility, please contact us.

What happens if I miss my bus?

We know that sometimes flights are delayed. We are also aware that there have been a number of reports about delays at the airport. Please do not worry - we will do our best to get you onto the next available bus if you miss the slot you have booked.

If for any reason we are not able to get you onto a bus that day, our team at the airport will provide further advice on arranging a taxi or using public transport. If you arrive late at night, you may wish to book a hotel for the night and continue your journey the next day.

What are the arrangements for using the service arriving from a red/amber/green country?

If you are travelling from a red list country, you cannot use the service until you have completed your hotel quarantine. As the meet and greet point is on the public side of the airport, you will be able to join the service if you travel back to the airport. Transport to the airport is included in ther quarantine package.

If you are arriving from a green or amber list country, you may use the service directly on arrival. For amber list students, you should travel to your accommodation to begin any required period of self-isolation, in line with government requirements.

Please note that students from all countries will travel together on the same coach. We will be implementing additional safety measures on all services, including reducing the capacity, requesting that face coverings are worn, and providing hand sanitiser. Coaches will be cleaned in line with the provider's policies.

It is your responsibility to ensure you follow government guidelines regarding arriving in the UK.

What if I am travelling to London Gatwick, or a different airport?

We are not able to provide an airport collection service from other airports at this time. As the meet and greet point for the service will be in the public part of the airport, you may choose to travel to London Heathrow (LHR) to meet the service.
