Book your airport collection

You can travel to campus on our free airport collection service over Arrivals Weekend.

Our airport collection service will once again be running from Friday 16 - Monday 19 September, to help you travel to campus. We will collect from Birmingham Airport (BHX) and London Heathrow (LHR) and drop off at our accommodation sites on campus.

Booking closed on Thursday 15 September. We will accept walk-up bookings on the day at the airport, subject to space and availability. Please find the Welcome Assistants at the airport (Terminal 3 Arrivals at London Heathrow, and near the Arrivals ramp at Birmingham Airport) to enquire.

What you need to know

How much luggage can I bring with me?

Wherever possible, we will accommodate luggage that you have brought with you. However, if the coach (bus) is full, we may not be able to fit it all in. If this happens, we will bring one large and two small items per students - for example you could bring a check-in size suitcase, and a carry-on size bag plus a handbag or small backpack.

You would need to arrange for any additional luggage to be transferred at your own cost. There are services available in the airport. Unfortunately it is not possible for luggage to be shipped and stored on campus - it will need to go directly to your accommodation address.

Either way, it is important that you are able to carry your luggage yourself. If you are unable to due to a disability, please let us know on the form when booking the service.

If you are travelling with large amounts of luggage, you may find it more convenient to arrange a taxi transfer from the airport, particularly if you are living in private or third-party accommodation.

What if my travel plans change?

If your travel plans change, you should update your booking. You can do this via Eventbrite. If necessary, you may need to cancel and re-book for your new arrival time.

It is important that you cancel your booking if you know you will not be travelling, so that we can offer the space to someone else.

What happens when I arrive at the airport?

When you arrive, you should pass through security and baggage reclaim in the usual way. Find out more about arriving in the UK.

The meet and greet point for the service will be at the bottom of the arrivals ramp at Birmingham Airport (BHX) and on the ground floor Arrivals area in Terminal 3 at London Heahtorw (LHR).

If you arrive to a different rerminal at Heathrow, you will need to make your way to Terminal 3.

You will be met by our Welcome Assistants, who will be wearing blue tshirts/vests. They will gather you and other students together, and direct you to the coach (bus), which is provided by Johnson's. The coach will be exclusively for University of Birmingham students, and will travel directly from the airport to campus.

There may be a period of time to wait before the coach departs, so that we can make sure we have collected everyone we are expecting and ensured that everyone is ready to depart. A Welcome Assistant will travel back to campus with you and will be able to answer questions and chat about student life.

Where will I be dropped off?

You will be dropped off on campus at the Vale, Pritchatts Park, or at Jarratt Hall for our Selly Oak accommodations.

If you are living off-campus, you will need to make your own arrangements for getting there from the drop off point, for example by taxi. Our Welcome Assistants will be able to help advise you.

Please note, if you are arriving to Birmingham Airport and will be living in off-campus accommodation, you will probably find it much quicker and easier to take a taxi directly from the airport to your accommodation. Our Welcome Assistants at the airport can help direct you to the taxi rank.

Can I bring a guest with me?

No, we are only able to transport current University of Birmingham students. If you will be under the age of 18 at the time of travel, or need a carer for accessibility, please contact us.

What happens if I miss my bus?

We know that sometimes flights are delayed. We are also aware that there have been a number of reports about delays at the airport. Please do not worry - we will do our best to get you onto the next available bus if you miss the slot you have booked.

If for any reason we are not able to get you onto a bus that day, our team at the airport will provide further advice on arranging a taxi or using public transport. If you arrive late at night, you may wish to book a hotel for the night and continue your journey the next day, or from Birmingham Airport, take a taxi.

My flight arrives after the last coach, what should I do?

If you arrive too late to take the last coach of the day, you might want to consider a couple of options:

  1. Stay near the airport overnight, and continue your journey the next day by taking the airport collection service, or using public transport/taxis.
  2. Make your own arrangements using public transport or taxis.

From Birmingham Airport (BHX), we would recommend taking a taxi in this situation.

What if I am travelling to London Gatwick, or a different airport?

We are not able to provide an airport collection service from other airports at this time. As the meet and greet point for the service will be in the public part of the airport, you may choose to travel to London Heathrow (LHR) to meet the service. You can also see our information on travelling to campus if you prefer to make your own arrangements.

Can you collect me on a different date?

We are only offering the collection service between Friday 16 and Monday 20 September. We will continue to monitor the global situation with travel, as we know there are some difficulties with flights in some areas. If we are able to provide additional dates, we will update this page.

I have a disability or other accessibility needs, can these be met?

If you have a disability or other accessibility needs that will affect your ability to travel on the coach, or that you would like us to know about, please contact us. Where appropriate, we can arrange for your carer to travel with you on the coach.
