Please take some time to read the information provided here and in Online Registration. You will be asked to agree to the declaration when you complete Online Registration.

How is my data stored and used?

Please see the student privacy notice to understand how the University stores and uses your data.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the data the University holds about you is up-to-date and accurate.  You can return to Online Registration at any time during the year to update your data.

Right to study

You will be asked to demonstrate that you have the right to study in the UK. All students who will be based in the UK (including students from the UK) for all or part of their studies must provide evidence of this.

Once you have completed Online Registration, the documents you have uploaded will be reviewed. You will be considered fully registered when we are satisfied that you have submitted the necessary documents and information.

International students must complete a Right to Study check. Through the Right to Study check you must provide conclusive proof that you hold the appropriate visa or immigration permission (including your Biometric Residence Permit, if applicable). You will not be allowed to start your studies until you have done so.

Disclosing a disability

We encourage you to disclose any disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010 (including dyslexia, mental health and other long term health conditions) at the earliest opportunity. We would also encourage you to register with the Student Disability Service to ensure that appropriate support is put in place for you in good time.

Please be aware that if you choose not to disclose your disability or to limit that disclosure you may not be able to access the full range of support available.

When you register with the Student Disability Service, you will be asked to provide consent for your information to be shared with relevant staff at the University and external agencies (where necessary). The University is keen to ensure disabled students are treated with respect and our professional services will deal with your personal information confidentially and sensitively. If you do not wish to disclose your disability as part of Online Registration, you can choose to disclose at any point during your studies by contacting the Student Disability Service directly.

The Guild of Students

Upon registering at the University, you agree to become a member of the Guild of Students unless you chose to opt out. The Guild would like to communicate with you via your University email and via The Guild's website about your membership of the Guild (e.g. to provide notice of general meetings, referenda and election of officers. The Guild may also send you marketing materials that they consider may be of interest to you.  The Guild will ask you for your consent to receiving these electronically, when you register at the Guild website.

Multi-Faith Chaplaincy

If you wish to receive information from the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy please tick the relevant box in Online Registration.  If you wish to have your name and contact details removed from the contact list at any time during the academic session you will need to contact the Chaplaincy directly.

Careers Network, your careers service at the University, provides students with tailored advice on how to begin making the most of opportunities on offer whilst studying at the University including: how to start with career planning, finding relevant work experience, meeting with our extensive network of employers, as well as support for the application and interview process ready to secure your chosen career. You will be asked to complete some questions to indicate your interests and needs. Please be aware that we will use your responses to offer you bespoke advice and support.

I have also read, understood and promise to obey the University Charter, Statutes and OrdinancesRegulations and Codes of Practice (including the Conditions of use of Computing and Network Facilities) and the changes made for the 2020/21 academic year, paying particular attention to the regulations on Attendance and Reasonable Diligence, Conduct and Fitness to Practise.

I understand that my registration is not complete until the University is satisfied that the documents I have provided demonstrate that I have the right to study in the UK.

I also promise to respect the University’s values and uphold the University's good name to the best of my ability, both while as a student, and if admitted to a degree, as a graduate.

As part of Online Registration, I have checked and amended where required my Personal Details, Addresses, Emergency Contact Details, Programme Details, Further Details and Data Sharing Agreements and Financial Sponsor Details.  I declare that the information that I have given as part of Online Registration is true and complete.

I have also read, understood and promise to obey the University Charter, Statutes and OrdinancesRegulations and Codes of Practice (including the Conditions of use of Computing and Network Facilities) and the changes made for the 2016/17 academic year, paying particular attention to the regulations on Attendance and Reasonable Diligence, Conduct and Fitness to Practise.

I also promise to submit to discipline and uphold the University's honour and credit to the best of my ability, both while as a student, and if admitted to a degree, as a graduate.

I acknowledge that in accordance with the requirements of section 22(3) of the education Act 1994 the University has issued a Student Code of Practice.

As a Registered Student, I understand that I will be required to produce my University Identity Card to confirm my identity when asked to do so by a member of University Staff.  Failure to disclose identity (i.e. my name, Student ID number, my address and Principal Academic Unit at the University) to a member of staff of the University in circumstances in which it is reasonable to require that such information be given shall be deemed a breach of Section 8 of the University Regulations and disciplinary action.

I acknowledge that:

  • the University will process my personal data obtained as part of Online Registration and other personal data that the University may obtain from me or other sources for any purposes connected with my studies, my health and safety, or for any other legitimate reason. My data will be used for statutory reporting, including to the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA)
  • my University email address (ending @bham.ac.uk or @student.bham.ac.uk) will be listed in the University's Email Directory which is made available to all students and staff and that I may be contacted by email about participation in University research projects.
  • my academic data may be disclosed to organisations acting as my sponsor
  • my assessments may be shared with third party academic comparison databases (such as Turnitin) to check for potential plagiarism as part of the University's requirement to maintain academic integrity
  • the University will publish my degree classification at the end of my studies

Neither the student nor the University shall be liable to each other for failure or delay in performing obligations if failure is due to any cause beyond that party's control e.g. war, national emergency, terrorism, acts of God, government restrictions, industrial action or unforeseen closure of the University.

Declaration of Registration 2015/16

The University's updated Legislation comes into effect each year on 1st August.  If you are a re-registering student you should note that you will be covered by the University Legislation (including Codes of Practice) for 2013/14 until the date on which your programme of study for the 2014/15 session commences, or 1st August 2014, whichever is the sooner.  From that date you will be covered by the Legislation for the 2014/15 session.

I agree to the  University of Birmingham processing my personal data obtained as part of Online Registration, or other data that the University may obtain from me or other sources. I agree to the processing of such data for any purposes connected with my studies, my health and safety, or for any other legitimate reason and to the publication of my degree classification at the end of my studies.  I understand that these data will be stored in manual and electronic files and is subject to the Data Protection Act and will be used for statutory reporting including the Higher Education Statistical Agency (HESA), for more information please see www.hesa.ac.uk.  I understand that my University email address (ending @bham.ac.uk) will be listed in the University's Email Directory which is made available to all students and staff.

I understand that my academic data may be disclosed to organisations acting as my sponsor.  I understand my assessments may be shared with Northumbria Learning as part of the University's requirement to maintain academic integrity.  

Neither the student nor the University shall be liable to each other for failure or delay in performing obligations if failure is due to any cause beyond that party's control e.g. war, national emergency, terrorism, acts of God, government restrictions industrial action or unforeseen closure of the University.
