Join us for an exciting free seminar on the secrets of Birmingham, with lively talks on a wide range of topics. Discover more about some of the lesser known aspects of the University and the city. Topics include Researching Birmingham's Sport History, The Cuneiform Collection, Hidden Gems of Campus, and The Coniston Saga. The seminar is open to staff, students and alumni.

'Race to fix Old Joe': The Escape Room

Thursday 14 March, 12:30 - 17:00, Careers Network Training Room, Aston Webb (near the Aston Webb Student Hub)

Old Joe is broken and needs you to fix him - have you got what it takes? This brand new and unique escape room experience has been designed especially for #HelloBrum Day, with enough cryptic clues to test even the biggest brains on campus! Suitable for teams of 3-5 people.

Canal Boat Tours

Thursday 14 March, 11:00 - 16:00, the canal bridge near Maple Bank, Vale Village

Are you even a Birmingham student if you haven't told someone that Birmingham has more canals than Venice? Explore Birmingham's sprawling canal network in style with a trip on a traditional canal boat! Tours leave from the bridge by Maple Bank at the Vale and take you on a relaxing hour long round-trip to Gas Street Basin and back.

Tours are free and take approximately one hour. Please note that the boats are partially open, so please dress appropriately for the weather. Refreshments may be purchased on board from the cash-only bar.

Additional tour added: An additional 4pm tour has been added - this tour only will be a one-way trip (approximately 30 minutes) to Gas Street Basin in the city centre. You will need to make your own way back from the city centre.

Instatour: Hidden Gems on Campus

No matter how long you've been on campus, there will always be something new to discover. Join the Development and Alumni Relations Office on one of their popular Instatours to discover some of the hidden gems on campus. No skills or experience needed, just bring along your phone or camera ready to snap some of the best views on campus.

Yoga at the Lapworth

Due to the success of our inaugural yoga sessions, UB Sport & the Lapworth Museum of Geology are joining forces once again to offer two FREE Yoga classes as part of HelloBrum Day. Classes will be held in the Lapworth Museum surrounded by the amazing exhibits. The classes are open to students, staff and community (aged 14+) of all ability levels and taught by a qualified instructor. Yoga mats are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.

Airsoft

Did you know Birmingham has a rich history of gun manufacture? Look around at some of the place names in Selly Oak and you will find a few hints of the industry which once thrived here, from the Battery Retail Park to the late Gun Barrels pub.

Join the Airsoft & Paintball Society for a target-shooting experience, using realistic BB-type guns to shoot small and accurate plastic pellets. How good is your aim?

No need to book, just turn up on the day for a safety briefing and target practice activity.

Social Tennis

Thursday 14 March, 16:00 - 17:00, Bournbrook courts

Sport & Fitness are hosting a FREE drop-in tennis session between 16:00-17:00 on our brand new outdoor courts. Join us for a fun social session suitable for all ability levels, supported by our resident coach Evie, who will be on-hand to offer advice and facilitate play.  All equipment will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own rackets/balls. As this will be a fun social session, the use of 5 courts will be available on a rotation.

No need to book - just turn up ready to enjoy some friendly tennis!

Burn FM Takeover

Can you track down our roving reporters? Tune in to burnfm.com takeover the airways (and campus) with all things Birmingham amid a giant game of hide and seek! Solve the clues to work out where on campus they are hiding, whilst finding out about some of Birmingham's best bits and hearing our best Brummie music.

  • Pop down to Digbeth Dining Club to try out some of the best street food in Birmingham.
  • Stop by The Electric Cinema, the UK's oldest working cinema just a two minute walk from New Street Station, and catch Captain Marvel, Green Book or The Favourite.
  • Enjoy some stand-up comedy with local favourites at The Glee Club's Thursday Night Comedy Carousel, voted the best comedy night in the Midlands two years running!
