Find out the essentials about getting connected to IT on campus and beyond.
The University uses single sign on for the majority of its online services, meaning you will use the same username and password. Your student username and password are emailed to you when you are invited to complete Online Registration (or receive confirmation that you are registered). If you have problems with your username or password, you will need to speak to the IT Service Desk.
Some of the main online services are:
- my.bham student portal - including Online Registration, your student email, programme information, Guild of Students and much more
- Canvas - the University's virtual learning environment
- Findit@Bham - your online access to the Library
- Student Intranet - a huge range of information for current students
- Wifi - wifi internet access on campus
You can use the Password Manager to change your password to something more memorable, and then to reset your password yourself, any time of the day or night without needing to contact the IT Service Desk. You will be prompted to change your password every 180 days.
You should keep your login details safe - never give your password to anyone, including your friends. Beware of scam or 'phishing' emails which ask for your details. The University will never ask you to 'verify' your email by clicking on a link.
Office 365 and Student Email
Microsoft Office 365 is a cloud-based service bringing you access to Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Lync on up to 5 devices free-of-charge whilst you are a student, as well as enhanced mail storage and access for undergraduate and postgraduate taught students. Find out more about Office 365.
Your student email address takes the form email@example.com. You can access your student email account by selecting the Office 365 icon from the my.bham portal. The University will contact you through your student email, so it is important to check it regularly. You can also set your email up on a mobile device.
Postgraduate Research students can access their email account at mail.bham.ac.uk
IT Help and Support
The IT Service Desk is your gateway to the University's IT Services. Search the knowledge base, report issues and find out more about what's on offer. You can visit the IT Service Desk in person at the Main Library (R30 - Edgbaston campus), or contact them online or by phone.
