Student Communities

Part of the joy of being a student is meeting lots of different students, but sometimes it's reassuring to connect with others who just 'get it'.

Local or commuting students

Many of our students are local to the University or choose to commute from the surrounding area. Meeting other students and making friends is important to help you settle in -  find useful information, link in to our community, and connect with others with our information for commuting students.

First generation students

First generation students are students who are the first in their family to go to university - which can be an incredibly proud but daunting time. Find out some useful information for first generation students.

LGBTQ students

As a University and as a city, Birmingham has lots of opportunities to get involved with the LGBTQ community. Find out more with our information for LGBTQ students.

Students with disabilities

Starting University with a disability, learning difficulty or long term health condition usually means there is more to think about and plan ahead. Find useful information and how to connect with other students with disabilities

Student parents and carers

Find support and opportunities with our information for students with parenting or caring responsibilities.

Mature students

Mature students are those aged over 21 at undergraduate level, and those over 25 at postgraduate level. We've put together some advice four our mature student community.

Other groups and associations

The Guild of Students has hundreds of student groups, so you're bound to find a group to suit you. As well as groups based around interests and hobbies, there are a number of cultural and international societies, such as the Chinese Society, Indian Society and Polish Society.

There are also a range of groups and associations of interest to particular communities of students, such as the International Students' Association and the Black & Ethnic Minorities' Association. You can also find societies related to your course, future career plans, or hobbies, with loads of variety including Debating, Sober Socials and Skydiving.
