Ben Waddington, author and founder of Still Walking, leads a walk around the block exploring the civic expectations and demands of today, from public spaces and parks to security and Wi-Fi.

Civic Gospel was a Victorian municipal ideology that provided citizens with quality architecture, thoughtful urban design and improved utilities. In 2024, it is difficult to think of any city running without grand civic buildings, public parks, libraries, clean water, gas and free education.

The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes. This walking tour starts at The Exchange.

Tour times

Thursday 13 June at 14:30 and 17:30.

This event is presented as part of a public programme of exhibitions and events exploring the heritage of The Exchange, University of Birmingham's city-centre location and former headquarters of Birmingham Municipal Bank.
