Biography

Chris Lonsdale first taught in 1992 at the Department of Politics, The University of Hull. In 1993, he moved to The University of Birmingham where he taught in both the School of Public Policy and in the Department of Political Science and International Studies. In 1994, he moved to the Business School to take up a research post and since that time has resided in the Procurement and Operations Management Group. He received his PhD in 1995 for work into the private equity market. In 1999, Chris became a lecturer in the Business School, becoming a senior lecturer in 2005. He has been Programme Director of the MBA in Strategy and Procurement Management twice, most recently between 2007 and 2009. In 2008, he became the Head of the Procurement and Operations Management Group. Also in 2008, he was awarded honorary fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, FCIPS. He was made Reader in 2011. In 2012, he acted as Programme Director of the UG Business Management degrees. Also in 2012, he won the University / Guild of Students' Outstanding Personal Tutor Award.

Chris has worked with a number of public and private sector organisations including the Department for Education and Skills, the Department of Health / NHS (2001 to date), IBM (1998-2007), Interbrew and Rolls Royce. In 2001, he was the joint-recipient of a £338,000 research grant from the EPSRC and other sponsors for research into buyer-supplier relationships. In 2002, he was the joint-recipient of a £75,041 research grant from the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Hospital Trust for research into organisational buying behaviour. In 2007, he was the joint-recipient of an £99,901 research grant from the ESRC for research into temporary employment in the UK public sector. In 2010, Chris became a recipient of an EREBUS CASE studentship, with the research focusing upon the development of sustainable procurement policies. All of these research projects have yielded a high number of publications (see list below), many in internationally leading journals such as Public Administration, the British Journal of Industrial Relations and Work, Employment and Society. In 2013, he will commence a £95,000 NHS National Institute for Health Research research project, working with Joe Sanderson and Russell Mannion.

Chris's current research activities focus upon public sector contracting, in particular the contractual arrangements for PFI and PPP, buyer-supplier relationships, trust and opportunism in business markets, the promotion of innovation through public procurement and organisational buying behaviour. Chris also retains an interest in political science, with a particular focus upon the politics of state-finance relations and modern political philosophy.
