This event is the second of 3 seminars on theme of Education and Palestine in the School of Education.

This is the second of three events on the theme of 'Education and Palestine'. Professor Williamson, Professor Kiwan and Professor Gordon will focus on questions of academic freedom and knowledge production, the reconstruction of education in Palestine, and human rights law as it relates to education in Israel and Palestine. 

Speakers

  • Professor Bill Williamson is a sociologist and Emeritus Professor of Continuing Education at Durham University
  • Professor Dina Kiwan is a Professor in Comparative Education at University of Birmingham
  • Professor Neve Gordon is Professor of Human Rights Law at Queen Mary University of London and the Vice President of the British Society for Middle East Studies

The event is open to all who register. It is a space to critically explore pressing issues for education in Palestine - as such, attendees need to be aware that sensitive and challenging issues will be discussed.

As is routine for University events, this will be a safe and respectful space for all in attendance, regardless of background, to hear from expert speakers and to pose appropriate questions.

Biographies

Professor Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson is a sociologist and Emeritus Professor of Continuing Education at Durham University. His academic work and publications crossed several boundaries: the sociology of education, comparative education, social and contemporary history and the theory and practice of lifelong learning. His most recent work has focused on educational aspects of the Israel-Palestine conflict. His forthcoming book Lifeworlds and Change in Palestinian Education is published by Routledge. In retirement, Bill works voluntarily as a mentor with the Durham Palestine Educational Trust to support postgraduate students from Palestine studying in Durham University.

Professor Dina Kiwan

Dina Kiwan is a Professor in Comparative Education at University of Birmingham. Her interests centre around sociological and politico-philosophical examinations of inclusive citizenship through the lens of education policy, naturalisation policy and migration policy, in particular in the context of pluralist / multicultural societies, and also societies in conflict. She is also an appointed member of the government's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC). Her book Academic Freedom and the Production of Knowledge was recently published by Cambridge University Press. 

Professor Neve Gordon

Neve Gordon is Professor of Human Rights Law at Queen Mary University of London and the Vice President of the British Society for Middle East Studies. His research focuses on international humanitarian law, human rights, the ethics of violence, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His books include Israel's Occupation, The Human Right to Dominate (co-authored with Nicola Perugini), and Human Shields: A History of People in the Line of Fire (also co-authored with Perugini). His articles have appeared in The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Al Jazeera, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The London Review of Books.
