Title of PhD: Emissions of Brominated Flame Retardants Associated with the Treatment of Waste Electronics, Furnishings and Building Materials

William Stubbings is undertaking a doctoral research project that will test the hypothesis that emissions to air and groundwater from waste materials in landfill constitute an important source of Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) to the environment. To test the project hypothesis and its objectives, an experimental programme is planned combining (a) field measurements of BFR concentrations in air and leachate at a number of UK landfill sites; with (b) controlled lab-based studies of BFR degradation as well as leaching and volatilisation from waste materials.

William Stubbings previously studied for his Undergraduate Masters degree in Geology at the University of Leicester. He then moved to the University of Birmingham undertaking an MSc in Air Pollution Management & Control before taking up his current post in September 2011.
William’s PhD is funded by the NERC under its Open Competition CASE studentship scheme with CASE sponsorship from AEA Technology plc.
