Agnieszka Leszczynski is a broadly trained human geographer whose work brings critical and social theory perspectives to bear on spatial media and spatial big data. She is interested in how the rise of locational content online and the pervasive enrollment of location-capable/-aware devices are bound up in the (re)production of the spaces and practices of everyday life. 

Her current work looks how individuals perceive and understand the ways in which they both intentionally and unwittingly generate flows of locational information about themselves, and the consequences of personal locational data generation and collection for locational privacy.

Agnieszka obtained her PhD from the University of Washington in 2012. Her dissertation worked to theorize the emergence and societal significance of the geoweb and spatial media. 

After completing her doctoral work, was a SSHRC-funded Postdoctoral Researcher and Queen’s Postdoctoral Fellow at Queen’s University in Canada in 2013. 

She joined the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Science as a Lecturer in Human Geography in 2014.

Dr Leszczynski welcomes inquiries from students with interests in:

  • (Spatial) big data and productions of the spaces and practices of everyday life

  • Geographic information technologies and social difference / digital social (in)equality
  • Critical data studies



Dr Leszczynski’s work broadly examines the social and cultural implications of the rise of locational content over the web. Her current research investigates how individuals perceive and respond to the ways in which their locational information is collected, disclosed, and repurposed by myriad applications, services, and third parties (developers, marketers) associated with everyday uses of location-aware mobile technologies. This work emphasizes the gendered dimensions of the erosion of locational privacy. 

She is also interested in how built-in locational awareness and capabilities of mobile technologies underwrite contemporary surveillance practices, and how the flows of personal locational data are implicated in structuring everyday life practices, spaces, and opportunities.
