My current MPhil thesis is a study of the forces that have transformed Smethwick in the West Midlands conurbation since 1945, including economic decline, social change and the influence of national urban policy approaches.  The impact of these wider drivers is examined alongside the local political and civic governance dimension.  It particularly explores how Smethwick was managed as an independent town and ultimately part of Sandwell metropolitan district during five identified periods of intensive change.  It considers how Smethwick may fare under austerity and the lessons to be learned for other parts of urban Britain.
