Year of study: Year 1, 2009/10
Why choose Birmingham?
I chose Birmingham because of its world class reputation for research as well as its consistent high ranking in the university league tables. However, what really convinced me were the fantastic facilities and opportunities available to those who study law here and the attitude of both staff and students.
The best thing about studying this programme is the knowledge that what you are studying is relevant. Whether you are buying a chocolate bar or renting a house with friends - the law you study at Birmingham applies to everyday situations. I am also looking forward to the wide range of modules available to me in the final year which will help me to specialise my skills and learning into something employable.
Teaching and Careers
The teaching on this course is everything to be expected of a university with such a high reputation for research. Every lecturer I have encountered has shown passion for their subject and delivered informative lectures which are easy for students new to the subject to understand. The Tort module in particular in first year is a good example of how a potentially tricky subject is made much easier by using interesting cases and simple to follow lecture notes.
There are a wide range of options available to students who wish to expand their learning and career prospects outside of the lecture theatre. I have played sport for the School (Rugby Union) and I also attend the many career seminars organised with some of the top law firms in both the Midlands and the country, where they show students what they can do with their degree after graduating. These activities instil a strong sense of hard work and drive to succeed .
