We offer two distinct programmes in Modern Languages and European Studies at undergraduate level:
The study of European languages and cultures (French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian) with a special focus on the comparative study of European cultures and media. The study of contemporary and historical features of European literature, film and media in their varying social and national contexts forms a large part of the syllabus.
The study of European languages and cultures (French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian) with a special focus on European political thought and institutions. The study of European politics forms a large part of the syllabus.
Study of Modern Languages and Year Abroad
In both programmes you will study at least one European modern language to honours degree level, with the aim of acquiring a high standard of oral and written proficiency. These programmes allow you to study your chosen language(s) in a broader European context. In each programme the proportion of time devoted to the study of languages is usually a half, but it can vary between one third and two thirds. All students spend the third year of their four-year course in the European country (or countries) whose language(s) they are studying.
